The purpose of this literature review is to provide information about the eye health care needs of older adults. Age-related eye diseases and conditions are the most important drivers for the various types of eye health care required by older adults.

The most common age-related eye diseases or conditions are cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), primary open-angle glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and presbyopia. For each, we provide a definition, describe the prevalence in the older adult population, and briefly summarize current prevention and treatment practices. The impact of vision loss from these diseases and the public health implications are also discussed. A brief description of the older adult population is provided in terms of demographic and cultural characteristics, as well as communication strategies that may be effective in delivering eye health care messages to this population.
